Use of Oil Filters

Oil filter is used in engine lubrication system to filter out dirt or girt particles from oil. Usually two filters are provided, one being fitted on the inlet side of pump and the other on delivery side. Oil filter systems are of two types.

Oil Filter
  • By Pass System. In bypass system, whole of the oil does not pass through the filter at the same line, but some of the oil without being filtered goes to bearings. Remaining oil passes through the filter and then goes to bearings. When the engine is run continuously for a long  period,  the whole oil is however, filtered.

Bypass System
  • Full  Flow  System.   In full flow system, the whole oil passes first through the filter and then goes to the bearings. If the filter is clogged due to any reason the system fails completely and bearings would be starved of oil. To avoid this situation a pressure relief valve is fitted in the filter assembly which will open and supply of unfiltered oil will continue to engine parts.
